In the 1950s, as Camp Gordon and the Savannah River Plant expanded, the need for a Lutheran church in South Augusta became apparent. With support from Resurrection Lutheran Church and the ULCA, a mission church was established in the Fleming Heights area in 1952. The following year, in 1953, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension was officially chartered. This new congregation included both local residents and military families. As Fort Gordon became a permanent installation, Ascension Lutheran Church also established a lasting presence, completing its first building in 1956.
During the Vietnam War era, Ascension continued to grow, especially among military families. The church offered two Sunday morning services, and by the end of the war, the attendance had stabilized. In 2023, Ascension celebrated its 70th anniversary. Although the church has seen a decline in membership, it remains dedicated to serving God and the community, offering traditional Lutheran worship services every Sunday. Recently, the congregation has entered a period of hopeful anticipation, eagerly awaiting a revival among believers in South Augusta. Ascension Lutheran aims to inspire and attract new followers, fostering a renewed spirit of worship and fellowship each Sunday.
